SEVA Award Night 2018
The 2018 SEVA (Student Educational Video Awards) Award Night was Sunday, April 15 at Sacramento State University. Student video producers from Sacramento County, their families, friends, teachers and administrators were in attendance.
This culminating event represents a year-long effort for over 1200 students from over 40 schools throughout the Sacramento region. Trophies were awarded to the top educational videos submitted in five categories (Creative Expression, Documentary, Instructional, Public Service Announcements, and School News) spread across K-12 grade levels. All videos entered in this year’s contest were celebrated and each award recipient was given the opportunity to make an acceptance speech in front of the packed house. Student video crews served as paparazzi and interviewed other student producers about their videos.
In addition to highlighting the student producers, the event also honored all media teachers and this year’s Allan Hinderstein Award recipient, Joann Darrow of Del Paso Manor Elementary School. The judge’s results for SEVA 2018:

Allan Hinderstein Award
Each year, SECC honors an outstanding video teacher with the Allan Hinderstein Award. This year’s Allan Hinderstein Award honors Joann Darrow, a 5th grade Rapid Learner Program teacher in the San Juan Unified School District. All students at Del Paso Manor Elementary School benefit from Joann’s commitment to integrating video as a tool for opening a world of learning possibilities. Her SEVA Studio Lab is a hub of interactivity, with students collaborating on a wide range of projects right in her classroom.
With Joann’s guidance, her students have entered over 130 videos to the SEVAs since 2012 and Del Manor Elementary students contribute monthly news programs that are shared on the SECC channels. Joann Darrow empowers and challenges students to explore the world through media and to share their vision within and beyond their school.
