Student DV
Student DV (Digital Video) is a unique, award-winning program that includes participation from 16 school districts, community colleges, a local ABC affiliate, local cable company and the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Commission and inspires students to produce educational videos to share their vision and ideas. SECC produces the program to showcase digital video programs created by Sacramento students, and the program is aired weekly on SECC's educational cable channels and in the Video Gallery.
Student DV features student work entered in the annual SEVA (Student Educational Video Awards) contest. Open to Sacramento county K-20 students, the SEVAs provide a variety of categories to express an educational message — PSA, school news/events, documentary and instructional.
Since many schools have a multimedia program, Student DV provides teachers with useful instructional materials to help
students learn more about video production and also see what their peers are creating.
Producing a video program involves much more than just taping an event. The knowledge and expertise needed for a successful production requires numerous cross curriculum skills including teamwork, ability to research topics, knowledge of subject areas, ability to communicate ideas, reading, creative writing and organization.

SEVA AWARD NIGHT
SECCs' annual SEVA Award Night has evolved into the premiere event to showcase student educational videos to the Sacramento community. Community members and educators play an active role in judging the video entries each year — participation in this annual event has grown to include more than 70 schools and thousands of students.
For more than 26 years, SECC has worked with students and teachers exploring the value of video production. The annual SEVA or Student Educational Video Awards contest is open to all Sacramento county students (K-20) and celebrates the talents and visions of student video producers. Winners and participants are recognized at this SECC and Comcast sponsored event and winning videos and producer interviews are shown on cable and online.
Students of all ages enter their multimedia projects in categories that include documentary, instructional, PSA (Public Service Announcement) and school news. The SEVAs also help connect SECC with Sacramento county students (K-20) and their entries are showcased on Cable 15 & 16 through Student DV, a unique series featuring videos, technical tips and teacher and student producer interviews.

2013 SEVA CONTEST
Open to all Sacramento county students (K-20), the Student Educational Video Awards (SEVA) contest celebrates the talents and visions of student video producers.
Winners and all participants are recognized at the annual SEVA Award Night, and winning videos and producer interviews are shown on SECC's cable channels and online and ffeatured in the Student DV show.

1. Documentary
An in-depth educational study about classroom curriculum topics, issues or people in current events or history.
Sub-categories
• Short: less than five (5:00) minutes

2. Instructional
Provides "how to" advice or teaches a subject or skill related to an educational topic.
3. Public Service Announcements (PSA)*
A short promotional piece about an educational topic.
* New: Must be thirty seconds (:30) or less
4. School News & Stories
Campus news stories, full broadcasts or coverage of a school event.

Digital Journalist Program
The Digital Journalist Program helps increase student media production, teaches the techniques of broadcast journalism, provides technical support for teachers and students, facilitates a larger outlet for student videos and increases participation in the Student Educational Video Awards (SEVA). The program is made possible through the combined efforts of the Gannett Foundation, News10 and SECC.
News10 and SECC production staff provide training for students and teachers at each site, and students have an opportunity to use video to share their visions and stories with the entire community — on News10, SECC’s cable channels and online.
One grant requirement is that the school submits at least two videos to SECC’s annual SEVA contest. Open to all Sacramento county students (K-20), the contest celebrates the talents and visions of student video producers and their work in the areas of documentary, school news/events, PSA and instructional.
For many years, SECC has instructed students about the value of video production. Special funding in 2002 from the Sacramento Metropolitan Cable Commission allowed SECC to launch the starter kit program and create three video kits loaned to interested schools. SECC provides quality educational resources to learners of all ages in the Sacramento community through video and other communication technologies via cable systems and networks and is a collaborative effort of the K-20 education community.
The Gannett Foundation grants enabled Sacramento’s News10 to join the program and teach students the tenets and values of journalism they practice daily.
