Meet the Author

Fairfax Network program brings reading and writing process to life
From its inception, the Fairfax Network's Meet the Author series has promoted literacy and an interest in reading and writing by giving students direct access to authors who share their personal stories, offer their writing tips and encourage students to "keep reading, keep writing, keep dreaming."

The connection established between authors and students brings the process of reading and writing to life. As a result, students are motivated to read new books, write their own stories, practice the art of illustration and find and establish their places in a reading and writing world.

SEVA Award Night

A Red Carpet welcome for SEVA Award Night students and teachers
Filling Folsom High School's theater with nearly 700 students, teachers, parents and guests, SECC's 19th annual SEVA Award Night on May 14 was bursting with talent -- and as much fun.

SEVA students and their teachers were welcomed on a red carpet that provided an opportunity for camera crews and student "paparazzi" to get the latest scoop from the stars.

Kelly Calhoun, Chairperson Elect of SECC representing Folsom Cordova USD, said that the "event is a celebration of the talents of our local students as television and media producers," and offered congratulations to all the participants who have an impressive understanding of the power of this medium. "You are all winners because you have taken the time to share your vision and videos with us," she concluded.

The 2008 Student Educational Video Awards competition had more than 250 entries, 100 more than last year, which meant that the competition was tough for the students from elementary, middle, high schools and colleges. The SEVAs are unique because they encourage students to focus on creating an educational message.

The 2008 SEVAs were sponsored by SECC, Comcast and News10.
