SECC and partner News10 sponsored this free training day to inspire teachers to get their students involved in SECC’s 2009 Student Educational Video Awards (SEVA) contest. The sessions provided guidance and ideas for video production, equipment recommendations, production techniques, software training, broadcast journalism techniques and more.

Filmmaking in the Classroom
In a rapidly changing world and workforce, students need multiple literacies, including media literacy. Gail Desler, Elk Grove Unified School District, explores the case for filmmaking in the curriculum and shows some simple, free programs for bringing this 21st century literacy into your teacher's toolkit.

Podcasting
Explore the basics of podcasting and the tools needed to publish digital media with a really simple explanation of RSS (Really Simple Syndication). Joe Parente, CSUS media professor, discusses how to use podcasts to monitor the progression of student achievement and how these findings can help you adjust your instructional techniques. He uses podcasting in his instruction and explains how students can also share their accomplishments through podcasts and other digital media publishing.

This guide — a collaboration between the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, Florentine Films and WETA public television station in Washington, DC — contains hands-on production tips and interview techniques from Ken Burns and Lynn Novick as well as information on how to send completed interviews to the Veterans History Project. This guide was created to help individuals and groups research, conduct and preserve the stories of our nation’s veterans and to ensure that they become a part of our country’s collective and permanent history.
